Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my buffer (and possibly spring) for use with my Wolf A1 upper. I'm running an H1 with a milspec spring now, but was looking at a few options and really thinking going H2. I don't have signs of tilt/wear yet, but I've only shot about 1k rounds so far with it. I also don't think I'd be terribly bothered by having to take out both pins during cleaning, if I were to go with an antitilt buffer.

What would you guys choose if money were no object? These are all so cheap (sub-$200) that the price differences don't matter. So far, I've heard great things about the JP, Armaspec, CTS, and Geissele. That said, the Geissele comes in H1 config from the factory, so I' have to add a tungsten weight to make it H2. Armaspec seems like it took JP Enterprise's idea and ran with it to make it even better with a second stage spring--but since I've not shot with it, I can't be sure.

I am leaning to the Armaspec right now since it not only is a captured buffer, but it has 2 spring stages for smoother cycling/recoil mitigation--not like 5.56 has any real recoil to begin with, but the smoother cycling is appealing. I'm mainly shooting XM193 and XM855.
  • JP Enterprises Silent Captured Buffer/Spring (H2 config)
  • Armaspec Stealth Recoil Spring (H2 config)
  • CTS Aktive Recoil Buffer (H2 antitilt config)
  • Geissele Super 42 buffer/spring combo
  • Vltor A5
  • Heavy Buffers Antitilt H2 + Wolff XP carbine spring
Thanks in advance!

Heavy Buffers Antitilt H2 + Wolff XP carbine spring. Add in a POF anti-tilt tube and you'll never worry about it. I've got over 1k worth through the one I have that setup on with zero tilt scrapes. I thought about going up to an H3 but IMHO the H2 does a great enough job I couldn't justify replacing it.

Thanks, guys!

Now final question: Even though tilt doesn't appear to be an issue for me after the roughly 1k rounds I've already shot through it in the last 2 months, would you both still recommend the Heavy Buffers H2 anti-tilt buffer + POF antitilt tube over a more generally higher regarded captive system like the JP Enterprises or Armaspec? These latter is supposed to have measurable effects on the recoil impulse due to the progressive combined spring rate, and I'd have the nice side effect of ridding myself of spring twang.

Thanks again!

Honestly I've never seen the justification of using one of the captive systems, tried a few and to me I didn't notice the added value. But I spend a LOT of money on firearms, ammo, etc. and I look at things as what they cost vs. what they bring to the fight, and the captive systems didn't make the cut. Plus I kinda like the the Sprong  I also take comfort in knowing that the backend of that BC is under control which is why I went with the Heavy Buffers buffer.

If you have experience with the two systems you mentioned and feel comfortable using one of them I say go for it and post your results here.

Thanks again! I think I'll probably end up getting both the Heavy Buffers H2 + Wolff XP spring and either the JP or Armaspec captive systems in H2. My BCM Recce 16 needs a better buffer as well, and it can't hurt having options. :)

Here's something else to look at. Looks like it has an less aggressive anti tilt feature but doesn't require both takedown pins to come out .

Well, Willver, what did you do?
I am still in the build of mine but have already spec'd a POF A-T tube and Super 42.
One of the things that makes me a T91 fan is I have a huge selection for tuning my buffer.
I have never heard of a mil spec buffer spring breaking; and even functions is set and short.
I too, am very interested in captive buffer systems.
One thing to keep in mind, the AR ejection system is a "flinger". The case is flung out of the receiver.
If you manually pull an empty case out of the breech until it clears the barrel, does it fling twenty feet?
No. The force for the ejection fling comes from the buffer hitting the back of the extension.
Mess with that and you mess with positive ejection. The same thing keeps the gas key from hitting the back of the charging handle.

So Im liking the old spring and buffer, just better made.
